“I am an interdisciplinary artist with a background in fibre art, theatre design and most recently, a social practice of early childhood education with a focus on forest school”

I have always been inspired by art as life

Jessilyn Leckie is a settler who grew up and who currently resides, on the traditional and unceded territories of the Sinixt, the Syilx, and the Ktunaxa peoples in what is now known as Nelson, British Columbia.

Leckie’s past school work has incorporated ideas about innate intelligence, the collective unconscious, dualism, the ‘divine’ feminine, imagination, intuition, meditation, healing and magic...

Leckie likes to explore ‘time’; due to its complicated history being inherently created as a tool for the use of capitalism. In past work she has attempted to interrupt time as a protest towards capitalism and the destruction it has caused. “I enjoy disrupting constructs such as this that we take for granted and that therefore should be endlessly challenged. In particular, I like challenging the concept of the nuclear family that our north american culture has created; driven by capitalist gain supporting misogyny and by default perpetuating asymmetrical power dynamics; causing trauma through toxic masculinity.” Turning towards natural rhythms and cycles are more interesting for Leckie in ways that time in a non-linear sense explore while simultaneously rebelling against capitalism as projected law.

Ongoing work lays in one-of-a-kind sticker making “this work keeps me inspired.” For Leckie stickers inspire the collective unconscious and she is particularly drawn to art making channeled from ‘the source’ in this unconscious format. “I also work with children (who I believe are closer to this ‘source’) doing art in outdoor/indoor schools and believe in inspiring art and nature in today’s youth. I am also interested in this work for my own personal growth due to its meditative and integral ‘nature’. One day I hope to host an artist-run art residence/forest camp for kids and artists on traditional and unceded Sinixt territory.”
